R.P. Gustavo Le Paige

The History of this particular museum begins with the arrival to Chile of the Belgian Jesuit Priest, Gustavo Le Paige.

In 1955 he set up in San Pedro and began, besides his pastoral labor, his interest for the Atacama culture past. Father Le Paige began visiting the prehistoric cemeteries, the workshops and the places inhabited by the atacamenians.

Step by step he started to collect material of a tremendous archeological value. In 1957 he and his collaborators opened in his parochial house the first museum, which counted with many pre Hispanic pieces (ceramics, lithics, textiles, metals) and mommies.

Visitors cannot miss the museum because it will help them to know the most important details of the history of San Pedro.
