Because of the closeness of San Pedro de Atacama to the frontier, it is possible to travel from and towards other countries such as Argentina or Bolivia through various international border passes: Jama, Sico, and Socompi.
Regarding Jama Pass, it is interesting to note that its route goes along the line of the bi-oceanic corridor. That is to say, it connects the ports on the northern Chilean shore, Antofagasta and Iquique with the northwestern region of Argentina (NOA), Paraguay, and the south of Brazil, facilitating the development of commercial activities, the exchange of goods and raw materials from and towards those areas.
These three border passes connect Chile and Argentina, but in the case of Socompa Pass, it is also possible to travel by train to and from Bolivia, through Ollague. There is also a dirt road running parallel to the railroad tracks.
Characteristics of each pass:
Jama Border
Sico Border
Border Socompa
